Actually Martinus Adrianus Stam (born August 5, 1899 in Purmerend, the Netherlands, † February 23, 1986 in Goldbach, Switzerland) was a Dutch architect and designer. In 1926 he invented and designed the first cantilever chair, which Marcel Breuer finally developed further. Stam lived in the GDR from 1948 and was rector of the Academy of Arts and the College of Werkkunst, in 1935 he became director of the Institute for Arts and Crafts in Amsterdam.
