The Bauhaus designers Charles and Ray Eames and Eero Saarinen experimented in 1938/39 to shape the plywood veneers three-dimensionally. The basic idea was to adapt the shape to the human anatomy. A high level of seating comfort should be achieved without elaborate upholstery. Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen won in 1940 with the so-called "Organic Chair" took first place in the competition. Due to the technical problems in the manufacture, they decided to separate the seat and back. From this development, the Plywood Chair was created in 1945 and shortly afterwards the Plywood Group.
