Florence Marguerite Knoll Basset (born May 24, 1917 in Saginaw, Michigan) is one of the most renowned American designers and architects of the 20th century and a pioneer in the manufacture of modern furniture. She studied with Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Eero Saarinen.

When all the American students in Europe returned to the United States at the outbreak of the Second World War, their contacts came to their aid. The deciding factor for Harvard University was that emigrated Bauhaus designer Marcel Breuer, the inventor of tubular steel furniture, was there Harvard University Graduate School of Design (GSD)

Knoll received a bachelor's degree in architecture from the Armor Institute (now the Illinois Institute of Technology) in 1941 and briefly worked with the leaders of the Bauhaus movement, including Walter Gropius, Marcel Breuer, and Wallace K. Harrison.

Florence Knoll designed sofas, armchairs, tables and sideboards in the minimalist style in the Bauhaus tradition.

She married furniture designer Hans Knoll in 1946 and together they founded Knoll Associates. A new furniture factory was founded in Pennsylvania and dealers in Knoll furniture have been carefully picked up over the next few years.
