(* 1883 † 1969) Walter Gropius was an architect and designer and, as co-founder of the Deutscher Werkbund and as the spiritual father of the Staatliches Bauhaus in Weimar, played a key role in shaping the design of the 20th century.
As part of a large-scale Berlin project, Gropius planned the Siemensstadt (1929/30), which followed from 1964 to 1968, the Berlin Buckow-Rudow settlement (now Gropiusstadt). Its most popular buildings include the US Embassy in Athens (1956-1961) and the Pan Am Building in New York (1958-1963).
As a designer, Gropius was known for his chairs, ceramics, lamps and other objects.
